Captain Wilkes School – Afterschool Science Classes with Dr. Erica
Mondays from 12:50-2:30 on the dates indicated for each session
Location: At Wilkes Elementary (location on campus may vary)
Fall 2019 Sessions:
September: Animal Tracking
September 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th ($100)
Learn about the science of animal tracking through storytelling, stamping, molding, and more.
October: Water Works
October 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th ($105)
Create your own water filter, discover how to create a solar distillation center, and build a salt water powered robot.
November: Engineering Challenges – Environmental Edition
November 4th, 18th, 25th ($75) – no class Nov 11th (Veteran’s day)
Put on your engineering hat as we try to solve environmental issues. Clean up an oil spill, create an air filter, and more!
December: Animal Dissection
December 2nd, 9th, 16th ($75)
Learn basic dissection techniques as we start with flowers and plants, move to owl pellets, and finish with worms!
January: Tinkerlab – Game Edition
January 6th, 13th, 27th ($75) – no class Jan 20th (MLK day)
Create a marble run, design a catapulting basketball game, and even think up your own game to create in this building, designing, and problem-solving class.
February: Projectile Motion
February 3rd, 10th, 24th ($75) – no class Feb 17th (school break – check out our Programming camp for that week!)
Build an Angry Birds catapult, launch airplanes, and build cork fliers as we learn about forces, aim, and more!
March: Hydraulics
March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd ($100)
Learn how we can use water to do work as we create moving models in this building, testing, and editing class.
April: Smart Garden
March 30th, April 13th, 20th, 27th ($105) – no class April 6th (school break – check out our circuits camp for that week!)
Learn about nutrients as we create a compost jar, then design a clay planter that we will attach a water sensing pump so you won’t have to worry about your black thumb!
May: Spy Science
May 4th, 11th, 18th ($75)
Try your hand at spycraft as we learn about ciphers, fingerprints, dead drops, and more.
