Adaptive optics at the Paranal Observatory

Oh my gosh, this reminds me so much of Rosie’s adventure in defeating the Asteroid of Doom in our Optics trilogy!!

This spectacular view of a laser firing up into the cosmos comes from the European Southern Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, where scientists have recently activated the new Four Laser Guide Star Facility.

The laser system is part of an advanced new adaptive optics system on ESO’s very large telescope at the Paranal Observatory. This adaptive optics system allows the telescope to adjust the shape of its mirrors in order to filter out the blurring effects of Earth’s atmosphere and gain a clearer view through the Milky Way.
